Highland Gate

This gate opens the Royal Route in Gdansk, as it is here that Polish kings visiting Gdansk received symbolic keys to the city. Built in the 16th century, it was part of the city fortifications. There used to be a moat filled with water near it. Beautifully decorated by sculptor Wilhelm van den Blocke, it received the coats of arms of the Republic of Poland, Royal Prussia and Gdańsk. Luckily, she survived World War II almost unscathed. In the past, it was the first element of the Gdansk Royal Route. An undoubted pearl of Renaissance architecture. When Napoleon Bonaparte entered Gdańsk in 1807, he was so enchanted by its beauty that he wanted to move it to France.
